HERITAGE CITIES ANURADHAPURA & POLANNARUWA 💛

Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are ancient heritage tourism destinations. It has been determined that these cities were the earliest kingdoms to form in Sri Lanka. One of the cultural triangle's two extremes is this region. These regions, which are mostly in the North Central Province, are home to a sizable number of ruins, lakes, rivers, and other natural resources in addition to a large number of heritage sites. These areas were also known as "Wewbedi Rata" in the past because of the incredible irrigation system in the area.


Anuradhapura, the first kingdom to arise following the Aryan migration to Ceylon, was ruled by King "Pandukabahaya" initially. Following him, numerous kings established prosperous kingdoms here. Anuradhapura is home to a sizable historic site In the meantime, the city is home to numerous places of worship, such as. Among them, "Jayasrimahabodiya" can be described as a tourist destination with religious significance. One of the most important religious sites for Sri Lankan Buddhists is this location.The oldest tree in the world with a recorded history is the Jayasrimaha Bodhi. Polonnaruwa was the subsequent kingdom to arise following the Anuradhapura Kingdom. There is also a strong resemblance between this region and the Kingdom of Anuradhapura. However, there are a lot of South Indian-inspired artworks in this kingdom. One example is the Shiva Devalaya in Polonnaruwa. According to historians, the invasions from South India were the cause. One of the many tourist destinations in the Polonnaruwa region is this. The Stone Temple of Polonnaruwa is one of them. It's a collection of Buddha statues arranged in one big black stone. It exhibits the mastery of the ancient stone carvers and is composed of extremely fine carvings.

Furthermore, a lot of tourists have been drawn to these kingdoms by their irrigation systems. Several of them are well-known, including Kalawewa, Nuwarawewa, and Tissawewa; there are also lakes like Parakrama Samudraya and canals like Yoda Ela and Elahera Ela. Only the sea is larger than this lake. These irrigation industries are marvels of human creation.
