 Right now, one of South Asia's most well-liked travel locations is Sri Lanka. There are many breathtaking mountains, rivers, historical places, and UNESCO World Heritage places in Sri Lanka. With a rich history spanning more than 2500 years, Sri Lanka is referred described as the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean." The most significant historical and archaeological sites that have evolved during this period have become the foundation of Sri Lanka's heritage tourism industry.

The Sri Lankan government is putting a lot of effort into developing and promoting these tourism spots. Sri Lanka has a lot of well-liked tourism spots. These cultural heritage tourist destinations are often arranged in the Cultural Triangle by the government. (Figure 01)

However, the majority of Sri Lanka's cultural attractions are centered in three cities: Kandy to the south, Polonnaruwa East, and Anuradhapura to the north. (Roughly 80 kilometers on either side).

These are a few of the ancient Sri Lankan cities that were constructed around former kingdoms. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are two of the most notable of them. Kandy, Purana Galle Fort, and other cities are also present. The area surrounding Sri Lanka's capital city is home to numerous religious and archaeological sites. Sigiriya is another historic site. This location has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This royal palace, complete with ponds and moats, is perched atop a massive rock. This area is home to numerous archeological monuments.

There are numerous such heritage sites in Sri Lanka. These locations have been preserved and opened to the public by the current administration. To achieve this, the Provincial Tourism Department and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority are working together. However, the Central Cultural Fund is in charge of the majority of cultural and heritage tourism destinations. It works on the upkeep and security of these websites. Sigiriya is one instance.

Sri Lanka is a nation with a diverse population that is multiethnic and multireligious. Since Buddhism is the most common religion in this area, Buddhist shrines surround the majority of these cultural monuments.  However, in addition to this, Sri Lanka's heritage tourism sector is active thanks to a number of historical events and cultural festivals. Consider the Kandy Esala Perahera that occurs in July and August. It's a religious celebration with a lot of proud artistic and cultural components. Travelers find this celebration to be highly popular. 


Many tourists visiting Sri Lanka have these heritage sites at the top of their list of things to do. Thus, you must travel to Sri Lanka if you wish to see historical sites.
